Blossom
Sunlight catches the cherry blossom
This morning, after an overnight late-April frost, petals were falling like snowflakes from the cherry tree outside our house. Some years the blossom is full and thick and lasts for weeks. Other years, a storm will blow through and the blossom is whipped off the branches overnight. This year, the blossom was late and opened with the leaves. It’s still hanging on in the sunshine, giving us something beautiful to look at everyday. The early morning snowflakes prompted me to dig out last year’s poem and share it before the petals have gone altogether.
Blossom
Preparations complete, the build-up has begun.
Here they come;
Fat little buds of energy bursting with joy.
Watch out below,
The party is about to start and soon your light will be out.
The first peep of white pushes, unfurls, to hang one upturned cup.
They’re here!
Hundreds, then thousands join.
Thick, white froth fills the bare branches and
The celebrations begin.
Layers upon layers of petals unfold
Emergent bees dive hungrily into the feast.
Fresh blue sky, sunlit blossom
The perfect celebration of spring
Two weeks of bling!
Before shades of toasted marshmallow seep into the petals.
Confetti falls and scatters the forget-me-nots.
This was a party to remember.
A photo just doesn’t do it justice
